Summary This leather bound volume contains specimens of algae or seaweeds, which have been pasted on pages of colored construction paper and framed by paper lace doilies. The algae have been arranged into designs and scenes.
The first page contains a design of algae which spells out the name of Augustus Graham (1775?-1851). Graham served on the first board of directors of the Brooklyn Apprentice's Library in 1823. The Library was the precursor to the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences and the Brooklyn Museum. He was a founder of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences and served as its first president from 1840-1851. The second page of the volume contains a design of algae spelling out: "sea Weeds 1848." Noted in ink on that page: "prepared by Eliza A. Jordan, Brooklyn, L.I. 1848."
Other features of interest are a label on the inside front cover with the name Eliza R. Coleman; a brief hand-written essay describing algae or sea weeds and the method of transferring these specimens to paper; a hand-written poem entitled "The Sea-weed" by Eliza Cook; and a letter dated December 9, 1848 to Augustus Graham from James Walters. This letter reads: "I am commissioned by the above named persons, members of the Brooklyn Institute to beg your acceptance, from them, of the accompanying volume of Algae, as a memento of their gratitude and esteem." Signatures of twenty-five men are on the top part of the letter. (A few of the signatures are in the hand of James Walters). The signatories are A.G. (?)ammonce, John Bell, A.W. Benson, Charles Congdon, James Dunham, Isaac Frothingham, John Hooper, R. Hoskin, James Howe, Gilbert Langdon Hume, William Johnson, Henry Jordan, Duncan Littlejohn, R.H. Manning, J.A.
