Biographical/historical note Anton Mauve (1838-1888) was a Dutch realist painter of landscapes and people and animals in outdoor settings. His best known works depict peasants working in the fields and his paintings of flocks of sheep were especially popular in America. He was a leading member of The Hague School of painters and was influenced by the French painters Jean-François Millet and Camille Corot. Mauve was born in Zaandam and studied in Haarlem under the animal painters Pieter Frederick van Os and Wouterus Verschuur. He later lived and worked in The Hague, Oosterbeck (the Dutch Barbizon), and the village of Laren. Mauve was a friend of Jozef Israëls and Willem Maris, and married Vincent van Gogh's cousin, Ariëtte (Jet). Mauve was a significant early influence on van Gogh who studied with him briefly. Mauve died suddenly in 1888.
