Essay by Maria Lusitano.
Paperback enclosed in vinyl silkscreened envelope case.
"'In 2007 I dragged my family to Sweden. We were all tired of a country, ours, that it was said, was afraid of existing' writes Maria in her essay, about her move from Portugal to Sweden. The photos collected here were taken four years later when I accompanied her in a farewell journey between Malmö and Stockholm, before she moved from Sweden to the UK. Through fragments, flashbacks and memories, this is a journey that evokes another planned by photographer Berenice Abbott and writer Elizabeth McCausland when in 1935 they hit the road for the photobook 'America. The 48 States.' Two women on the road, self-consciously documenting their situated, dis-embodied geographies. More than a road-trip, however, this is an attempt to essay photographs and writing into the double vision of the migrants' eyes. The journey in the diaspora is recreated in the photo-text through gatefolds and splits that fragment the photos in halves, a process that can be reverse-engineered through cross-referencing the photos to the indexical writing."--Artist's website (viewed August 10, 2016)
Brooklyn: Library has copy 4/250, signed and numbered by the artist.
Summary Nothing to undo investigates the ontology of the artist's photobook, an 'emerging object' at the intersection of artist's book (affordable, self-published work with the artist in full control of conceptual and editorial strategies) and the photobook (with its immersive exploration of printed photography in the space of the book).
