Provenance The portrait hung in the historic "Nelosn House" at Yorktown, the home of the subject's descendants, until it was removed, for safe keeping during the Civil War, to Richmond, Virginia, by William Nelson IV. It was returned to "Nelson House" after the war;
after the death of William Nelson IV, the portrait passed to his sister, Mrs. Corbin W. Mercer (Fannie Burwell Nelson) (she deposited in the Virginia State Library, Richmond, where it remained for years);
sold by her, ca. 1927, to her cousin, Mrs. Thomas Nelson Carter (Agnes Atkinson Mayo), a descendant of the subject;
her daughter, Mrs. Douglas Crocker (Isabel Carter), Fitchburg, Massachsuetts.
