Provenance The portrait has always been owned by some branch of the family;
Mrs. Nathan R. Gorter, Baltimore, Maryland, by 1926;
by whom sold to Mrs. Langdon Cheves Wilkins, Brooklyn, New York, great-great-great-granddaughter of the subject (on loan at the Brooklyn Museum, November 1927);
by whom sold to a dealer for $1,300;
with Alvin C. Detwiler, dealer, Washington, December 1940;
Mrs. Walter B. Guy, Washington, by 1944 (according to Sellers in 1952, both this portrait and the companion portrait of James Arbuckle were in the Harmanson or Harmsen line of the family "until a very recent period");
her son, Benjamin W. Guy II, Washington, by 1968.
Current repository Benjamin W. Guy II, Washington, District of Columbia, United States, private.
Attribution history The earliest of Peale's many mother-and-child groupings. According to Sellers, it suggests the influence of John Singleton Copley in the pose of the boy and the rich blue of Mrs. Arbuckle's dress.
