Provenance Portrait has always been owned by some branch of the family;
Mrs. Nathan R. Gorter, Baltimore, by whom it was sold to Mrs. Langdon Cheves Wilkins, Brooklyn, great-great-great-granddaughter of the subject (on loan at the Brooklyn Museum, November 1927);
this picture and the companion painting of Mrs. James Arbuckle and her son Edward Arbuckle were sold by Mrs. Langdon Cheves Wilkins to a dealer for $1300;
by 1940 with Alvin C. Detwiler, dealer, Washington, D.C.;
Mrs. Walter B. Guy, Washington, D.C.;
her son, Benjamin W. Guy II, Washington, D.C.
