Condition history (d) Very well preserved; (f) Dirty varnish.
Color notes (e) Black and gold predominate, with touches of red. Projecting halo with a few remaining knobs in gesso.
Attribution history (c,f) Italian School, Pisan - 1st quarter 13th c., by Richard Offner, (c) 15 October 1924. The elliptical iris in the scene of the deposition, is in common with the Crucifix in the Academy at Florence which is probably by a contemporary. Perhaps the finest of the period. Very early. The painting could not have been painted in middle of 13th c., when the painting was looser and less inspired, (f) 1927, dated to circa 1215. Subject (c) Exquisite character of execution, great dignity in the figure, and beauty in the single scenes. The angels at the top are very Byzantine.
