Attribution history (a) Attributed to Simone Martini by Santangelo, 1948. The restoration proved what had been suspected, that the picture is a modern forgery painted on genuine 14th c. gold ground; (b) Italian School, Tuscan - 14th c. by Federico Zeri, Rome, Italy, 21 March 1961. Companion panel, London collection, St. James. A genuine 14th c. work. Not by Simone Martini. Tuscan rather than Sienese.
