Attribution history (c) Attributed to Italian School, Venetian - 4th quarter 18th c. by Fernanda de Maffei, 1 December 1954; (b) Attributed to Anonymous - 18th c. by Frick Art Reference Library, December 1954. There is evidently no connection whatever with any of the Bassano family in this much later painting.
Subject (a) Venus soliciting Vulcan to make armor for Mars. Obviously a slip for Aeneas, illustration of a passage in the Aeneid.
