Attribution history (a) Spanish School - 3rd quarter 18th c. by Berthomieu, 1923. In this century, genre painters were giving cartoons to the tapestry factory of S. Barbara. Among such artists were Francisco and Ramon Bayen, and Joseph del Castillo; (b) Attributed to Bassano by Tournal, 1864; (c) Attributed to Italian School, Venetian - 18th c. by Frick Art Reference Library, August 1946. Although much too early in date, the attribution to the Bassano family seems to have been more accurate in its geographical placing of the picture, by some minor genre master, such as Gasparo Diziani; (d) Italian School by Martin S. Soria, 1946. Not Spanish.
