Provenance (a,b) Chiesa di S. Vincenzo, Galliano, Italy, near Cantu (Basilica di San Vincenzo) (remains of frescoes on the left wall of the nave).
Current repository S. Vincenzo, Cantù, Lombardy, Italy, public.
Condition history (f) Much ruined; (c) The frescoes are not all preserved, but and old engraving gives us a fairly precise idea of the apsidal decoration; (d) The unfortunate decision given by Appiani, Albertolli and Bossi, is responsible for a great deal of the wretched condition of the church; (b) These simple structures have recently been restored.
Attribution history (d) Circle of Italian School, Lombard - 11th c. by Nebbia, 1912. And the 12th frescoes which decorate the walls and the choir of the basilica are among the very rarest incunabula of the region; (f) Italian School, Lombard - 11th c. by Nebbia, 1912. The influence of Byzantine art in these frescoes is undeniable. This was transmitted from Italy into Germany in the 11th and 12th c. through Lombardy most of all; (b) Italian School, Lombard by Touring Club Italia, 1939. The ancient basilica di S. Vincenzo and the Baptistery of S. Giovanni have been built in the 5th c. and rebuilt in the 11th; (c) Italian School - 11th c. by Toesca, 1923, dated to 1007. The church is obviously a Benedictine work, influenced by German works of art. The church seems to be consecrated in 1007, so that probably the paintings were finished at this date
