Color notes (e) The colour scheme is sombre; the man is dressed entirely in black, which is relieved against a dark myrtle-green curtain. The table is covered with a dark blue cloth with stripes of dull red.
Attribution history (b) Italian School, North by Richard Offner, 1927; (d,e) Lorenzo Lotto, (d) by Bernard Berenson, 1932, (e) by Roger Fry, 1906; (g) Italian School, North - 2nd quarter 16th c. by Roger Fry, 1986. Often ascribed to Lotto, and formerly attributed by the Metropolitan Museum to Lorenzo Lotto and to an unknown Venetian painter, 2nd quarter 16th c. with Flemish or German influence.
Subject (g) The costume, books, and skull suggest that the subject was an ecclesiastic.
