Color notes Gray wig, white stock, chocolate-brown coat. Brown-black background. Feigned oval.
Attribution history The owner in 1924 did not know who painted the portrait; attributed by Frank W. Bayley in 1925 to the school of Sir Godfrey Kneller; possibly by Charles Bridges; during restoration at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in April 1936, considered by Harry B. Wehle to be by Gustavus Hesselius. Attributed to John Hesselius.
Subject Thomas Lee was the son of Richard and Laetitia Corbin Lee. He was president of the Virginia Council for many years and organized a company for the exploration and settlement of lands in Ohio, but the scheme proved unsuccessful. He had just been appointed royal governor of Virginia at the time of his death in 1750. He married Hannah Ludwell, daughter of Philip and Hannah Harrison Ludwell in 1722. Children: Richard, Philip Ludwell, Hannah, John, Lucy, Thomas Ludwell (1730-1777), Richard Henry (1732-1794), Francis Lightfoot (1734-1797), Alice, William (1737-1795), Arthur (1740-1792).
