Provenance (m) This picture and its companion of Sir John by John Trumbull passed at Lady Temple's death to her daughter, Augusta Grenville Temple (1779-1852), wife of William Lambe Palmer of England, a captain of the 18th Light Dragoons of the British army (William Lambe Palmer died);
(m) at William Lambe Palmer's death, the picture passed to Augusta Grenville Temple's daughter, Elizabeth M.P. Palmer of England;
(m) by whom both pictures were presented in 1838 to her cousin, Elizabeth Augusta Temple (died 1878), wife of Lieutenant-General Edward Byam of the British Army, and daughter of Sir Grenville Temple (1768-1829), ninth Baronet;
(m) given to her brother, Sir Grenville Temple (1799-1847), tenth Baronet (died) (the pictures hang in Mrs. Byam's home, Warblington Lodge, Hants, England);
(m) at his death, his son, Sir Grenville Leofric Temple (1830-1860), eleventh Baronet (still hanging in Warblington Lodge, Hants, England);
(m) his son, Sir Grenville Louis John Temple, twelfth Baronet (still hanging in Warblington Lodge, Hants, England);
(m) at Mrs. Byam's death in 1878, the portraits were deposited with her cousin, Thomas Lindall Winthrop, of Boston, at his home, Buckland Grange, Ryde, Isle of Wight, England;
(m) about 1880, Sir Grenville Louis John Temple, the owner, sold both portraits to Mr. Winthrop;
(m) by whom presented to his daughter, Honora Temple Winthrop, wife of Joseph Grafton Minot, Esq., of Boston, and both pictures were brought to America and placed in Mrs. Minot's home, Boston;
(m) purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Minot's son, Grafton W. Minot, by G. Peabody Gardner, Jr., and Charles P. Curtis, Jr., trustees for William Amory Gardner Minot (when the trusts are disbanded or when he comes of age, the portrait will belong to William Amory Gardner Minot, grandson of Mrs. Joseph Grafton Minot);
(m) Sale, Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, Samuel Borchard and Other Collections, January 9, 1947, lot 44 (as property of a Connecticut Private Collector) ($1,700).
