Provenance (a) "Said to have been owned by Cary Selden of 'Salvington,' Stafford county, a son of Samuel Selden by his second wife, Sarah Mason Mercer, who was a daughter of John Mercer (1704-1768) and a first cousin of Samuel Selden's first wife, Mary Thomson Mason. This Cary Selden had an only child, Ann Cary Selden (d. September 16, 1838), who, dying at the age of sixteen, left..." this picture "...to a cousin, Margaret Mercer, a Mercer descendant (by cross-marriage) of Mrs. Mann Page (Mary Mason Selden) of Mansfield, the daughter of Samuel Selden by his first wife, Mary Thomson Mason...";
