Provenance (r) Sent from England to the subject's eldest daughter, Frances Parke, who was married to John Custis the 3rd, Arlington, Virginia;
(r) their son, Daniel Parke Custis;
(r) his wife, Martha Dandridge, who was later married to George Washington, Mount Vernon, Virginia;
(r) John Parke Custis and his wife, Eleanor Calvert, on the occasion of their marriage, Abingdon, Virginia (John Parke Custis died 1781);
(r) after his death, the picture was taken to "Hope Park," where Mrs. John Parke Custis (Eleanor Calvert) was married to Dr. David Stuart;
(r) George Washington Parke Custis and his wife, Mary Lee Fitzhugh, on the occasion of their marriage in 1804, Arlington, Virginia, remaining there until the Civil War in 1861;
(r) George Washington Custis Lee (on loan about 1900 to Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia);
(r) Dr. George Bolling Lee, New York (died July 13, 1948);
(r) Mrs. George Bolling Lee, New York (on loan in 1949 to the Virginia Historical Society, Richmond, withdrawn on August 15, 1960);
(r) Mrs. A. Smith Bowman (Mary W. Lee), McLean, Virginia.

Related works (r and s) This picture is the first of three portraits which the artist painted of the subject. One went to the subject's youngest daughter, Lucy Byrd of Westover, then to "Lower Brandon," then to Mrs. Robert Clifford Harrison, Savannah, and by May 1986 was owned by the Virginia Historical Society, Richmond (see Frick Library photograph files). A photograph of another of these paintings is hanging in Windsor Castle, England.
