Provenance (d and e) Possibly one of three paintings given to William Bingham, the 2nd Lord of Ashburton (creation 1835), by the King of Spain around 1855;
(d) bequeathed at his death in 1864 to his wife, Louisa;
(d and e) bequeathed at her death in 1871 to her only child, Mary Florence Baring, who in 1884 married the 5th Marquess of Northampton, William George Spencer Scott, and died in 1902;
(d) purchased in 1903 from the Marquess of Northampton by the National Gallery, London (1930).
