Summary The bulk of the collection documents the research conducted by the College Art Association of America for their publication, "The Index of Twentieth Century Artists," through correspondence, exhibition catalogs, press releases and news clippings. Of particular interest is the correspondence between the College Art Association staff and those artists considered for inclusion. Most of this correspondence was with American artists, including Paul Manship, Alexander Archipenko, Walter Pach and Alexander Stirling Calder, though French artists are also found. Also included in this collection are exhibition notices received by the staff of "Parnassus," another College Art Association publication.

Biographical/historical note The College Art Association of America, founded in 1911, is a membership organization dedicated to education in the visual arts. Throughout its history, this goal has been pursued in part by the publication of periodicals such as "The Index of Twentieth Century Artists." This serial featured 125 contemporary American artists during its publication from 1933-1937, listing exhibitions, reproductions, and bibliographies for each artist.
