| Summary |
Catalogue of an exhibition of the work of the Dutch Renaissance sculptor Willem van Tetrode held at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and the Frick Collection, New York. Tetrode worked in Paris and Florence under Benvenuto Cellini, ca. 1541-ca. 1552, and subsequently in Rome with Guglielmo della Porta. Tetrode's stay in Rome coincided with the discovery of such antique sculptures as the Farnese bull and the Farnese Hercules, and he produced reproductions of Roman sculptures for the studiolo of the Count of Pitigliano. Tetrode's original work is idiosyncratic and has echoes in the work of Hendrik Goltzius. The book contains a section by Frits Scholten documenting Tetrode's career, an essay by Emile van Binnebeke on the Pitigliano studiolo, a history of Tetrode's casting technique, largely by Francesca G. Brewer, and a catalogue of the works exhibited. Illustrated in color and black and white. |
