Provenance Descended in the family to Herbert H. Hosmer, South Lancaster, Massachusetts (the subject's sister, Mary Greene Chandler (Mrs. John Ware), was the great-great-aunt of Mr. Hosmer and the subject's daughter, Alice Greene Chandler, was the first cousin of Mr. Hosmer's grandmother and first cousin twice removed of Mr. Hosmer).
Current repository Herbert H. Hosmer, Jr., South Lancaster, Massachusetts, United States, private.
Subject John Greene Chandler was born on December 18, 1815 at Deer Farm, Petersham, Massachusetts. He was a wood-engraver and lithographer in Boston and Roxbury from c.1840-1860 and illustrated the 1840 edition of "The Remarkable Story of Chicken Little". Though the origin of this traditional children's story is lost in obscurity, his version seems to be the first completely American one. He married Sarah Ann Guild of Roxbury, Massachusetts on June 5, 1850. They had two daughters. He died in Lancaster on September 11, 1879 and his wife died at the age of 93 on November 20, 1909 in Lancaster.
