Condition history (f) Both panels have been cut down to same size.
Attribution history (b) Master of Anghiari by Frick Art Reference Library, New York, 1927. This and no.21, "The Triumph of Titus Sebastian", are parts of the same cassone and by the same hand; (c) Follower of Paolo Uccello by Schubring, 1923. The same artist painted also a cassone panel in the Lanckoronski Collection and one in the Cincinnati Museum, both of battle scenes; (e) Circle of Francesco Botticini by F. Mason Perkins, 1927; (f) Florentine School (15th century) by Richard Offner, 1927, dated to circa 1470; (g) Michele di Matteo da Bologna, by Filippini, 1924. And parts of Sano predella as no.21, by F. Filippini, 1924.
Subject (b) Two parts of a cassone front showing the battle between the Romans and Gauls; (c) Two panels showing a victory of Caesar over the Gauls outside of Rome; (f) One shows a massacre of the Jews and other a victorious army.
