Subject (b) Mrs. Brush, wife of the artist, (i) was born Mary "Mittie" Taylor Whelpley, on January 11, 1866, the daughter of Mary Louise Breed and Dr. James Davenport Whelpley, a physician and inventor, who died while Mittie was young. She was sent to New York and apprenticed to the artist F. Luis Mora and entered a class at the Art Students League under George de Forest Brush, who had begun teaching there in 1855. She married Brush on her twentieth birthday, January 11, 1886. (g and i) They had eight children. (g) Mrs. George de Forest Brush died in Dublin, New Hampshire on July 29, 1949. (b) This is the last portrait of his wife. (g) Brush painted small portraits of his wife and grandchildren during the last two years of his life, when he was seriously ill and hospitalized.
